Amira had just one request: “Can you pick a girl? I’m engaged.” Given
the intimacy of the photograph, I thought her request was a reasonable one.
I had gone to the park that day in search of strangers to photograph.
I had been inspired by Richard Renaldi’s Touching Strangers series, in
which he asks complete strangers to physically interact with each
other while posing for a portrait. That is why, after explaining the
concept to Amira, she asked that the other stranger be another woman.
As it turned out, finding the strangers and persuading them to
participate was the easy part. Posing strangers together is hard. How
do you create a connection between two strangers? It took a couple
minutes to find a pose that worked and it was interesting to see how
their expressions changed as they moved closer together.
I’m looking forward to taking more photos like this one!
